At What Cost?

I often find myself at odds with the benchmarks of success in today’s world..

I am confident you have shared this exact sentiment in your times of reflection. You would have returned home from hard toil at work and thought to yourself I don’t get the point of this.. or scrolling through social media you may have thought I don’t get people anymore…

This realisation of being at odds with the world around you holds a far more deeper connotation. It is not just about a generational gap or unfamiliarity with the most current digital trends..

People that wake up and find themselves missing something or feeling out of place are realising the benchmarks have shifted around them.

The definition of ‘having it all’ or being ‘cool’ or ‘hip’ is changing at break-neck speeds today, driven by the ‘Fear of Missing Out’ (FOMO). People want to strive for the proverbial ‘this’ or ‘that’, and admittedly humans have always been striving for more, but the digital age has exacerbated this markedly.

In the pursuit of the next best thing and the increased speed with which humanity is wanting the next best thing, we are eroding the quality of character and abandoning pursuits that once mattered.

‘Having it all’ can be materialistic, such as the next best car or house or jewellery or handbag or it can be a collection of career or academic accolades. Striving for something better isn’t the issue, but if the pursuit of the next best thing does not serve a worthy purpose and comes at the cost of your character.. then is it really worth it? When will you be content?

My definition of ‘having it all’ is finding true love… there is nothing more worthy and satisfying.

You may say… finding true love for yourself is a selfish purpose, however, true love brings out the best in a person. Thereby allowing you to enrich the world around you.

True love allows you to feel content, it brings you peace in a way no amount of money or houses can.

My best friend would joke, it is better to be rich than happy… because money would allow the purchase of lavish luxuries that would bring happiness…
We used to laugh about this and play the game of what luxuries we would enjoy if we won a million dollars.

However, on a serious note, I would rather take love over money… it seems like an unfair trade in the short term… life will be toilsome, but true love is worth paying the cost.

I have everything that the world deems worth having… but it pales in comparison to having true love beside you.
