What do you treasure?

A person’s most prized possessions are the ones they treasure above all else.
As a person matures in life they glean from experience that the material is ironically immaterial in the scheme of things.

It is not any specific objects of desire or allure that we wish to possess, rather it is the utility, nostalgia and a certain ‘Je ne se qua’ that holds our gaze drawing us in till we can’t seemingly live without that thing.

In my view, let’s dig a bit deeper, lasting treasure is not the temporal and material object but rather the irreplaceable memories invoked by those objects.

Physical objects will eventually deteriorate and disintegrate into nothing but the memories in consciousness remain. The human consciousness is immune to the physical elements and passage of time. As long we’re alive, those memories of that special someone will remain alive, never to become damaged.

The memories attached to the objects given to us by that special person that comes along in life only once, is the tangible best treasure one could have.

The objects themselves may not hold great value in a monetary or utilitarian sense, it could be something as mundane as an embossed diary or something out of the ordinary as a copper drinking pot or a piece of home decor or a gold necklace.

What humans treasure is ultimately subjective and examining those feelings allows me to better understand myself. We treasure things because we feel that we can’t replace them.

Think back to your own life, would you rather part with a large sum of money or with the last gift given to you by a loved one who is no longer with you? That piece of jewellery your mum gave you before she passed, or a ring your boyfriend gave you as sign of his love…

Would you rather have the opportunity for a career promotion or hold onto the last gift your girlfriend gave you?

When it’s all been said and done, the special people in our lives themselves are the real treasure, they add significance and value to the objects that remind us of them.
