A question is asked to illicit information… but what does one do when the information is so vast that the answer to the question becomes incomprehensible?
The meaning of life has been pondered since time immemorial by fools and sages. If you ask a thousand strangers on the street this question, you’re bound to get a thousand different answers.
Yet, there is an old saying by Benjamin Franklin “nothing is certain except death and taxes.” This would imply there are certain aspects of life that are guaranteed or inevitable if you will..
In my experience, Ecclesiastes 1: 8-9 also confirms the universal belief in the inevitability of shared human experiences.
8 All things are wearisome,
– Ecclesiastes 1:8-9 (Bible)
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
9 What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.
One pondering the meaning of life would be forgiven to think that this existence is absolutely meaningless and full of sorrow.. that no matter what they do the toil just seems too cumbersome. So why keep on living?
“If you don’t get what you want, you suffer; if you get what you don’t want, you suffer; even when you get exactly what you want, you still suffer because you can’t hold on to it forever. Your mind is your predicament. It wants to be free of change. Free of pain, free of the obligations of life and death. But change is law and no amount of pretending will alter that reality.”
– Socrates
I have been told that life is to live and discover yourself through the experiences… that means the experiences could be good or bad?
What Benjamin Franklin and dear Socrates said is only one side of the equation…in life there is also joy, peace and most of all love!
To understand life is to understand each equation has two sides. Although there is death and taxes, work and misery, bills and sorrow.. There is also love.
The meaning of life is the pursuit of love! Not only to experience it but to give it to others.
Not everyone experiences love the same way or in the same form. Some of us never receive familial love, others still are abused by strangers. Each of us has to surround ourselves deliberately with love. Firstly seek God, for He is love… If we can’t find it from others, we must nurture it from within.
As long as there is love in life… it is worth living, for love even for a minute outweighs all the misery and sadness of a lifetime in the bliss and solace of knowing you’re loved by God and by a special someone.
It is the absence of love from ones life that leads to ultimate despair.. for anyone facing the most challenging of times is able to traverse through when they have love to support them and guide them.
Pursue love.. this is the meaning of life!
